A strike-slip fault is when two blocks slip past one another, like the San Andreas Fault line. A normal fault is a type of dip-slip fault where one block moves down, a thrust fault is when the block moves up and over the one below it. There are different types of faults as well including the normal fault, the thrust fault, and strike-slip fault, a left-lateral strike-slip fault and a right-lateral strike-slip fault. Those derogatory stories could have eroded the fortune Thiel was building in Facebook, where he remains a board member.ĭuring Wednesday's court proceedings, Gawker's attorneys asked the judge to allow them to seek evidence from the other side regarding Thiel's supposed involvement. Others believe Thiel may have been far more upset about Valleywag's stories mocking Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and questioning the social network's value before it went public in 2012. The attack spurred speculation that Thiel was still angry about a Valleywag report two years earlier about his sexuality. In a 2009 interview, Thiel called Valleywag "the Silicon Valley equivalent of al-Qaida" and said it relies on people who "should be described as terrorists, not as writers or reporters." Thiel has never hidden his contempt for Valleywag, a gossip site that Gawker periodically ran during the past decade to expose the secrets of Silicon Valley moguls, sometimes in salacious fashion. Gawker reacted to the reports by saying: "There are very serious questions about whether Hulk Hogan financially benefited, and this case is far from over." Hogan's lawyers wouldn't comment on the Thiel story but praised the judge for denying a new trial and accused Gawker of refusing to accept responsibility for "their reprehensible behavior and method of doing what they call journalism." Thiel, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes at $2.7 billion, didn't immediately respond to interview requests made through email or on the voicemail of a mobile phone number he previously provided to an Associated Press reporter. Gawker vows to take the case to an appeals court. Ĭobain's parents found new partners after the divorce. : 17 In a 1993 interview, he said he felt "ashamed" of his parents as a child and had desperately wanted to have a "typical family. : 20 He later said the divorce had a profound effect on his life, and his mother noted that his personality changed dramatically Cobain became defiant and withdrawn. When Cobain was nine years old, his parents divorced. He listened to artists including Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), and, from a young age, would sing songs including Arlo Guthrie's "Motorcycle Song", the Beatles' " Hey Jude", Terry Jacks' " Seasons in the Sun", and the theme song to the Monkees television show. At age four, he started playing the piano and singing, writing a song about a trip to a park. According to his aunt Mari, he began singing at the age of two. Ĭobain developed an interest in music at a young age. : 11 He was encouraged by his grandmother, Iris Cobain, a professional artist. His talent as an artist was evident from an early age, as he would draw his favorite characters from films and cartoons, such as the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Donald Duck, in his bedroom. Kurt was described as a happy and excitable child, who also exhibited sensitivity and care. His maternal uncle, Chuck Fradenburg, played in a band called the Beachcombers his aunt, Mari Earle, played guitar and performed in bands throughout Grays Harbor County and his great-uncle, Delbert, had a career as an Irish tenor, making an appearance in the 1930 film King of Jazz. Ĭobain's family had a musical background. His younger sister, Kimberly, was born on April 24, 1970. Cobain mistakenly believed that his Irish ancestors came from County Cork. They first settled in Canada, where they lived in Cornwall, Ontario, before moving to Washington. : 7 Researchers found that they were shoemakers, originally surnamed "Cobane", who came from Inishatieve, a townland within Carrickmore. : 13 : 7 His Irish ancestors emigrated from Carrickmore, County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1875. He had Dutch, English, French, German, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. His parents married on July 31, 1965, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. In 2006, he was placed 20th by Hit Parader on their list of the "100 Greatest Metal Singers of All Time".Ĭobain was born at Grays Harbor Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington, on February 20, 1967, the son of waitress Wendy Elizabeth (née Fradenburg born 1948) and automotive mechanic Donald Leland Cobain (born 1946). He was ranked 7th by MTV in the "22 Greatest Voices in Music". Rolling Stone included Cobain in its lists of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, 100 Greatest Guitarists, and 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home at the age of 27 police concluded he had died on April 5 from a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.Ĭobain was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, alongside Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, in their first year of eligibility in 2014. In March 1994, Cobain overdosed on a combination of champagne and Rohypnol, and he subsequently entered an intervention and underwent a detox program. He also struggled with the personal and professional pressures of fame, and he had a tumultuous relationship with his wife, fellow musician Courtney Love. ĭuring the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with a heroin addiction and chronic health problems such as depression. In addition to "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Cobain wrote many other hit songs for Nirvana, including " Come as You Are", " Lithium", " In Bloom", " Something in the Way", " Heart-Shaped Box", " All Apologies", " About a Girl", " Aneurysm", and " You Know You're Right". Although Cobain was hailed as the voice of his generation following Nirvana's sudden success, he resented this, believing his message and artistic vision had been misinterpreted by the public. After signing with DGC Records, Nirvana found commercial success with the single " Smells Like Teen Spirit" from their critically acclaimed second album Nevermind (1991). He was heralded as a spokesman of Generation X and is highly recognized as one of the most influential alternative rock musicians.Ĭobain formed Nirvana with Krist Novoselic and Aaron Burckhard in 1987 and established it as part of the Seattle music scene that later became known as grunge. Through his angst-fueled songwriting and anti-establishment persona, Cobain's compositions widened the thematic conventions of mainstream rock. Keep an eye out for these areas and rack up some massive points!ĭrag Another fun event from Underground returns, although it hasn't changed as much as the Drift competitions have. They are usually wide-open areas and instead of asphalt roads, the road will turn into gravel or brick. There are certain areas in downhill drift races that are prime spots to score some points. Traffic is the same as the walls, so if you hit them while drifting, you'll lose all of your points that you've accumulated during a drift. On top of that, the downhill variations feature traffic that crosses your path. Downhill Drift races require you to beat a pre-determined score, instead of competing with other cars in the same race. The little twist in Drift is that you also have downhill competitions to worry about. Points are earned by drifting, but are lost if you hit a wall or guard rail on the course. You want to get a good, long drift in during the races, but be sure not to enter the turns too slow. The faster and harder your drift is, the more points you rack up. As in the first game, you'll compete with up to four other competitors to see who can rack up the most points while drifting around the course. Instead, slow down and try to take your turns carefully.ĭrift The popular event from the first Underground game is back, but with a little twist. While Huizinga paid attention to irrational aspects of human history, he was critical to the irrationalism of “philosophy of life.”Īt the age of sixty-five, Huizinga published another masterpiece, Home Ludens (1938). The work is primarily a study of history, yet it goes beyond the narrow disciplinary genre of history in the sense of the analytical, philological study of a series of events, and deals with interdisciplinary cultural realms where anthropology, aesthetics, philosophy, mythology, religious studies, art history, and literature are intertwined. His monumental work, The Autumn of the Middle Ages (1919) was written from this perspective. History, for him, was not a series of political events that lacked the vivid feelings and experiences with which one lives. With his literary skills, Huizinga succeeded in depicting how people in the past lived, experienced, and interpreted their cultural lives. He particularly focused on the sense of beauty and its artistic expressions and images. Rather, he tried to depict the states of human spirit and thought imbedded in dreams, hopes, fears, and anxieties. Huizinga refused conceptual schematization and patterning of history. He conceived history as the totality of diverse aspects of human life, including religious faith and superstitious beliefs, customs, constraints, the sense of morality and beauty, and other elements that constituted culture. Huizinga continued and developed Burckhardt’s approach and contributed to establish the genre of cultural history. Burckhardt was critical to modern philological and politics-centered approaches, and pioneered the cultural approach to history. Prior to Huizinga, in the nineteenth century Jacob Burckhardt pioneered and established the cultural approach to history. He died in De Steeg in Gelderland near Arnhem, and is buried in the cemetery of the Reformed Church in Oegstgeest. From this point until his death in 1945, Huizinga was held in detention by the Nazis. In 1915 he was made professor of general history at Leiden University, a post he held until 1942. He continued teaching as an orientalist until becoming the professor of general and Dutch history at Groningen University in 1905. It was only in 1902 when he turned his interest towards medieval and Renaissance history. He presented how all forms of human cultures emerged and developed as a modification and manifestation of playfulness.īorn in Groningen, Johan Huizinga started out as a student of Sanskrit and did a doctoral thesis on the role of the jester in Indian drama in 1897. In this work, he identified the essence of human beings with “ playfulness,” exhibited it as the primordial drive of human existence, and showed it as the archetype of diverse cultural forms. The work was the culmination of his studies as a cultural historian and a philosopher. Later in his life, Huizinga published Home Ludens: A Study of the Play Element in Culture (1938). The Autumn of the Middle Ages (1919), a masterpiece of cultural history which fused images and concepts, literature and history, and religion and philosophy, established Huizinga as the major cultural historian of the twentieth century, comparable with Burckhardt. |
